What are you called to do? (2)

Filed under: feedback — by walkonby @ 6:16 am

‘You are the salt of the earth…’ Matthew 5:13

When God called Moses, one of the questions He asked him was, ‘…What is that in your hand?…’ (Exodus 4:2 NIV). Moses held his shepherd’s staff. It represented his livelihood; it’s what he was good at. It represented his income; his flock was his wealth and his family’s security. God asked him to be willing to lay it down. God still asks, ‘What is that in your hand?’ What has been given to you? Your gifts, your money, your temperament, your experience, your relationships, your mind, your education. God has given you what Dr Martin Seligman calls ’signature strengths.’ Seligman found that human abilities fall into certain categories. He defined them as: a) wisdom and knowledge (which includes abilities like curiosity, love of learning, sound judgement, and social intelligence) b) courage (perseverance and integrity) c) humanity (with capacities for kindness and the expression of mercy) d) justice (the ability to bring about fairness and leadership) e) temperance (qualities like self control, prudence, humility) f) transcendence (the appreciation of beauty, the expression of gratitude, the ability of hope, the capacity for joy). We all have the capacity for each of these strengths, but a few resonate more deeply in you; they are your ’signature strengths.’ Identify these, and you begin to understand your calling. Sometimes we think God couldn’t or wouldn’t use us because of our weaknesses. No, the opposite is true. No one can speak to those who grieve, better than those who’ve suffered loss. Chuck Colson was the chief White House lawyer, until Watergate. But it wasn’t until he was a convict that he was prepared to begin prison fellowship. Today, if you let him, God will use you.

Knowing what we’re up against!
‘…Take up the whole armour of God…’ Ephesians 6:13
In spite of a great spiritual awakening in Samaria, Simon the Sorcerer was still in business. The people ‘…heeded him because he had astonished them with his sorceries for a long time’ (Acts 8:9-11 NKJV). So, how do the apostles handle this situation? Sidestep it? Coexist peacefully with evil? No, they confronted him with the claims of Christ, saying: ‘Repent…[that] your heart may be forgiven…’ (Acts 8:22 NKJV). And Simon did. A good doctor identifies the problem then treats it. The forces of evil around us are real, and we must know how to deal with them. Remember the tortured man living in the tombs of Gadara whom Christ healed? The spirits within him did two things worthy of note. First, they introduced themselves as ‘…Legion…for we are many’ (Mark 5:9 NIV). A legion was a well trained, fully equipped division of the Roman army that took orders from Caesar. Second, they ‘…begged Jesus…not to send them out of the area’ (Mark 5:10 NIV). That’s because they’d established a stronghold there. Can you see a spiritual parallel here? You can’t fight spiritual battles with carnal weapons and hope to win. Blaming satan for all your problems is a cop-out, but failing to see him at work in your situation renders you powerless. To fight and win you must know what you are up against. You must be able to look beyond the obvious and see the actual! You are dealing with ‘…principalities…powers…the rulers of the darkness…spiritual hosts of wickedness…Therefore take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day…’ (Ephesians 6:12-13 NKJV).

How to receive God’s Word (1)

Filed under: feedback — by walkonby @ 5:03 pm

‘…Open your ears to the words of his mouth…’ Jeremiah 9:20

What attitude brings the greatest benefit when hearing or reading God’s Word? Receive it as God’s Word – not man’s! It’s propagated by us, but originated by Him. ‘…when you received the word of God…from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is…the word of God…’ (1 Thessalonians 2:13 NKJV).

Here are four things you must always remember about your Bible:

1) It’s authoritative. ‘They were astonished at His teaching, for His word was with authority…they were all amazed …saying, ‘…”What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out” (Luke 4:36 NKJV). The forces of darkness around us must r
ecognise and submit to God’s authoritative Word. So stand on it!

2) It’s creative. ‘…by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed’ (2 Peter 3:5 NIV). His Word alone was enough to create all that exists. He doesn’t have to strive or sweat, He just has to say it and it’s done. So speak God’s Word!

3) It’s effective. ‘”…my word…will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it”‘ (Isaiah 55:11 NIV). Every Word God speaks is on a mission and is guaranteed to accomplish it in accordance with His will, His strategy and His timing. So put God’s Word to work!

4) It’s dynamic. ‘”…The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life”‘ (John 6:63 NIV). When you receive it as the Word of God, it produces life-changing results. It can’t just sit there and do nothing, it must generate, for it is ‘…the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe’ (1 Thessalonians 2:13 NKJV)! http://www.ucb.co.uk/word_for_today .

..I have a story for you,

Your record is cancelled!

Filed under: feedback — by walkonby @ 4:34 pm

‘…He forgave us all our sins, having cancelled the written code…that was against us…he took it away, nailing it to the cross.’ Colossians 2:13-14

How would you like to have a list of all your sins and shortcomings made public? Not a pleasant thought, eh? Does such a list even exist? It does, and it’s a lengthy one. It details all the bad decisions you’ve made, the hateful acts, the unforgiving attitudes, the prejudices, the greed, the lust, the lies; the Bible says God has recorded them all. But you’ve never seen the list, have you? No, and neither has anybody else. That’s because He forgave all our sins and cancelled the record of the charges against us. Knowing full well that the price for our sins was death, ‘Christ died…once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God’ (1 Peter 3:18 NIV). Christ both ‘forgave’ and ‘cancelled the written code…that was against us…’ Jesus set aside His divine robes and put on our sin-stained garments of shame: the shame of hanging naked before His friends and family; the shame of failure where it seemed for a while that satan was the winner and Jesus the loser; the shame of our transgressions as ‘He…bore our sins in his body…so…we might…live for righteousness’ (1 Peter 2:24 NIV). Is there a limit to His love? If there is, David the adulterer never found it. Nor Paul the persecutor. Nor Peter the liar. Nor the thief on the cross. And you won’t find it either. When Jesus cried from the cross, ‘It is finished,’ God wrote ‘Paid for in full’ over every sin you’d commit – from the womb to the tomb!

Thanks Baz, and Miss Sunshine Cherry :-)
I’m having a hectic afternoon. That feature in the news did nothing but increase on my work load. Guess I’m just complaining from all the memos that my immediate boss has been dishing out. Today’s was the size of the font used on billboards.

I’ve been instructed to stay clear of the slang…they should be addressing my co-host(there I go again, pointing fingers) I’m working on it.

I hope the show today is better than yesterday’s even if by just a hair,I’ll be happy. See you on the inside….well, you do the listening.
